37 SUMMER ANNUALS Summer annual grasses play an important role in the production of high quality feed and forage during the summer months when cool season grasses and legumes become semi-dormant or non-productive. They are especially well suited for areas with limited moisture due to drought or declining water tables. Summer annual grasses are also effectively used as an emergency forage crop when perennial forage or corn crops will not have adequate production.
